WREN

Wren looks across the round table at Dex, having chosen not to sit beside him for the interview session. He has a way of making her agree to things she doesn’t want to do. Which is dangerous. She hadn’t planned on liking anybody in Askala.

She glances at Nova. Someone else who’s impossible not to like.

Switching her gaze to Shiloh is a little more comfortable. Now there’s someone she finds easy not to like. The way she’d humiliated Dex when he’d joked with her was unacceptable.

But she’ll keep. People always do.

Like Kian.

Although, her hatred for that obnoxiously loyal Bound has simmered somewhat recently. It helps that he uses her name now, but it’s more than that. Despite herself, she’s starting to understand why Dex and Nova think so highly of him.

She looks at him now, observing the way he has his hand on the back of Nova’s chair, naively believing he can protect her from the evils of the world.

But there’s more to him that that.

He’s smart. He’s strong. He fights for what he believes in.

Wren blanches, realizing why she’s drawn to those traits. It’s exactly how she sees herself. Only her loyalty is to the Outlands.

Kian’s is to Askala.

Which means it doesn’t matter how much progress they’ve made. They’ll never be on the same team.

“How long will we have to wait?” asks Felicia, her curls seeming to have been regenerated while they were gone. She and Thom are looking noticeably healthier than the rest of them with their pink, peeling skin and bloodshot eyes. A wash, a meal, and a good night’s sleep had helped them recover from the effects of the ocean, but it will take some time to feel normal again.

Felicia drums her fingertips on the table when nobody answers.

It’s the same table they sat around for their first test with the blocks. A test that feels like it was a decade ago instead of only a few days. So much has changed.

Nine have become eight. And all Felicia seems to care about is how long they have to wait to relive the story of Jay’s death. Wren would be quite happy if Callix keeps them waiting all day.

She’d been surprised at how difficult it had been to watch the last moments of Jay’s life. In the Outlands, comments are often made about killing all those who live in Askala. Wren has punched her own fist in the air many times at such comments and cheered along with her companions.

But seeing it with her own eyes? Watching the terror on Jay’s face and hearing his screams as he’d been pulled under the water, then the pool of red liquid bubbling to the surface… well, that was nothing to cheer about. Jay was a guy with his own hopes, dreams and fears just like anyone in the Outlands. He was still human.

The door opens and Callix and Lana walk in. Callix is wearing his usual irritating frown. Lana, her usual irritating smile. What gives these people the right to place such judgment upon them? They bleed and shit just like anyone else.
